2015 AIA Maui Executive Committee Candidates

Introducing the candidates for the 2015 AIA Maui Executive Committee:

Paul Areus, AIA

Paul Areus is originally from British Columbia, Canada. He went to elementary school in Long Island, New York and High School in Eugene, Oregon. He graduated with a B. Arch from the University of Oregon in 2005 and moved to Maui after spending the summer in Alaska working on the Historic American Building Survey with the National Park Service. He worked with Bamboo Living as an Architecture Manager for almost 7 years, completing projects throughout the Hawaiian Islands. After becoming licensed, in 2012, he founded Areus Architecture. Paul has been married for 5 years to his wife Wendy & they have a 4 year old daughter, Athena. Some of Paul's personal interests include playing music, cooking, mountain biking, hiking, water sports & travel.

Peter Niess, AIA

Born and raised on Maui and went to Haleakala Waldorf followed by Seabury Hall.  After attending Oregon State University for two years he transferred to Arizona State University where he received a BS in Planning Cum Laude in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design.  This was followed by a Master of Architecture at New School of Architecture and Design in San Diego.  While living in Mission Beach he worked at KRAI Architects in Coronado Island learning everything that they do not teach us in school.  After moving home in 2006 he has worked on a variety of projects both commercial and residential.  "I love my job and love talking about anything and everything architecture."

Atom Kasprzychi, AIA

From a family of craftsmen and artists, Atom Kasprzycki was born and raised here in the beautiful Hawaiian islands.  With a wife of 15 years, and two energetic sons, Atom is a dedicated family man with a passion for Architecture and learning.  As a licensed Architect and General Contractor he finds himself today, a new member in the AIA, pursuing a deeper emersion into Architecture and fulfilling his enjoyment of learning.

J. Morgan Gerdel, AIA

Morgan is a licensed architect and a Principal in the firm Nishikawa Architects. He graduated in January 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Art and Design from the MIT School of Architecture and Planning. Upon returning to Maui, Morgan began working for Nishikawa Architects as a Project Manager.  He helped to establish a new design-build division, Architectural Design & Construction, Inc., that has completed over $60 million in construction since its founding.

Specializing in residential design, he has also designed light commercial, educational and land development projects. He has become a LEED Accredited Professional, a designation that indicates a strong depth of knowledge in sustainable design.

Morgan served on the Maui County Urban Design Review Board from from 2010 to 2014, and was elected to Vice Chair. He also supported the local nonprofit Valley Isle Road Runners as President from 2010 to 2013.

Morgan’s personal interests include running, cycling, and training his dogs in rally and agility.

George Hlavenka, AIA

Mr. Hlavenka is a graduate of Kansas State University (‘70) and Temple University (‘67) with degrees in Architecture and Construction. He is licensed in seven states with over forty years’ experience in commercial and institutional architecture.

George was a partner with the firms of Jacobs + Hlavenka Architects, and HGBD Architects – Jacobs/Hlavenka Division in Gainesville, Georgia, and since 2002 is G.R. Hlavenka Architect.

Mr. Hlavenka has been a member of the American Institute of Architects for 36 years, and is Certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He has been a member of Rotary International for over 20 years, and is a member of the Upcountry Rotary Club. George has two children in California, and resides with his wife of 43 years, Lucinda, in Haiku.

Aliki Biniaris, Associate AIA

Aliki Biniaris was born in Greece, & moved to Maui shortly after being born. Aliki graduated with a Masters in Architecture in 2012 from the University of Oregon.  She received her bachelor degree in Art from the University of Hawaii in 2008.  In 2012 she moved back to Maui and is currently working towards becoming a licensed Architect.

Mike Williams

Mike Williams is a fourth generation Maui resident. He began in sales of building materials in 1974 at Lewers & Cooke Maui Branch. He currently is the owner of Valley Isle Building Products specializing in the sale of windows and doors.
