2012 AIA Maui Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to this year's AIA Maui Scholarship Recipients!

A Lahainaluna graduate and a University of Hawaii-Manoa doctoral architecture student were named the recipients of the $3,000 American Institute of Architects scholarships.

Kiara K. Galicinao of Lahainaluna and Reece A. Bonilla of UH-Manoa were selected to receive the AIA Maui/Joint AIA National Chapter's 2012 Architectural Scholarship Awards.

Galicinao, the daughter of  Kelsie Matsui and Kevin Galicinao of Lahaina, has been accepted by the University of Oregon in Eugene and the University of Hawaii-Manoa.  She is the Lahainaluna High School 2012 Valedictorian, spent 3 years on the Junior Varsity and Varsity cheerleading squads, was a member of the National Honor Society, SkillsUSA for Architectural Drafting, Kokua Krew, Hawaiiana Club, Aloha Club, and participated in student government, after school tutoring, and Habitat for Humanity projects.

Bonilla, the son of Roy and Edie Bonilla of Pukalani, is enrolled in the architectural doctorate program at UH-Manoa.  He volunteers with Home of F.A.T.E., doing drafting work for projects that focus on housing and helping at-risk youth and teen moms.

Scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities and financial need were criteria used by the selection committee of Alvin Yoshimori, Calvin Higuchi, Larry Clark, and Wendy Fujinaka.

The recipients will receive their awards at a luncheon to be held 25 July at Bistro Casanova with guest speaker Jennifer Chirico, Executive Director of the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM) at the University of Hawaii-Maui College.  Cost for lunch will be $25.
