SLIM Renewable Energy Programs


This program provides entry-level training in solar hot water.  The curriculum introduces students to solar thermal applications, theory, safety issues, troubleshooting and monitoring, solar thermal design and installation for residences, small business, and commercial buildings.  The course includes both classroom and hands-on experience within labs.

This course introduces participants to small wind energy systems.  It is a combination of classroom training, hands-on exercises, and field experience that provides students with a broad, solid foundation in small wind energy.  The program topics include wind theory, safety, design, electrical basics, metering, grid and interconnected services, code, zoning, and ordinance requirements, OHSH training, and wind turbine trouble-shooting.  Maui College installed a wind spire this year, which will be used in conjunction with the class labs.

Shanah Trevenna was recently named 1 of 5 people who will shape Hawaii in the next 50 years by Hawaii Business Magazine. She created a student-led initiative called Sustainable Saunders, which implemented $150,000 in annual no-to-low cost waste, energy, and water savings at UH's Saunders Hall. Her presentation is based on her recent book, 'Surfing Tsunamis of Change, A Handbook for Change Agents' that chronicles their journey to build a state-wide sustainability movement. 

This event is funded by the Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training (PCATT).
